
Pharmaceutical distribution chain assessment in Iraq
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE
The pharmaceutical distribution sector in plays a critical role in the country’s healthcare system, with private sector players such as pharmacies, wholesalers, drugstores, and scientific offices shaping market dynamics. To enhance transparency and efficiency, a comprehensive national market research initiative was undertaken to assess the structure, distribution channels, and market dynamics of pharmaceutical distribution. The primary objectives of this project were to map the distribution landscape, analyze key stakeholders’ roles, and provide data-driven recommendations to improve pharmaceutical supply chain efficiency. The study also sought to establish a systematic approach for Point-of-Sale (POS) monitoring, ensuring real-time data collection for informed decision-making.
PROJECT APPROACH
The project began with the design and execution of a national census covering key players in the pharmaceutical distribution chain, including pharmacies, wholesalers, drugstores, scientific offices, and hospitals. Surveys were conducted to gather multiple datasets, offering a granular view of distribution patterns and market structures. A comprehensive analysis of survey results was performed, with findings presented to key stakeholders to facilitate informed decision-making. Additionally, a detailed geographic mapping of distribution networks was developed to highlight market participants and their relative positions within the distribution ecosystem. A representative sampling approach for POS monitoring was also created, supporting ongoing market surveillance and regulatory oversight.
OUR METHODOLOGY
A multi-pronged research methodology was deployed to ensure accuracy and reliability. Selective market player surveys were conducted to capture insights from key stakeholders. A data collection and quality assurance framework ensured data integrity and reliability. Both qualitative and quantitative analytical techniques were employed to derive actionable insights from the data. Geographical mapping tools were used to visualize distribution networks and market reach. Additionally, POS monitoring support systems were developed to facilitate real-time tracking and analysis. The integration of real-time data upload to a central application server, complete with GPS location and timestamp validation, ensured seamless and accurate data capture, enhancing the credibility of findings.
THE RESULTS
The project successfully collected the maximum expected sample size, ensuring robust and statistically significant insights. Survey data was uploaded in real-time to a central application server, with GPS tracking and timestamp validation adding an additional layer of accuracy and traceability. The study derived conclusive recommendations on the nature and structure of country’s pharmaceutical distribution chain, providing clear strategic insights for stakeholders. These findings will aid in optimizing distribution strategies, improving supply chain efficiency, and fostering a more structured pharmaceutical market.
